Google Maps for Treo's

November 15, 2006

TreoCruising around looking for a nearby coffee shop?  Driving to that new restaurant but can't remember which street to turn on?  Now you can get business locations, maps, and directions while you're on the go.  And it's all free.

Google maps is now available for Treo's!  I've used it with my Treo 650 locally and out of the country to find locations and to get directions from one place to another.  It gives real-time traffic information, to identify traffic congestion, and estimate delays in over 30 major US metropolitan areas.  Google maps also has integrated search results to get local business locations and contact information to appear all in one place, integrated on the map.   Before this application, I used to go to Google maps, input my start/end locations to get directions and print before heading out on the road.  Now, I can use my Treo to get a satellite view or point to point directions on the fly.  Unfortunately, it doesn't give audio directions, you will have to click on the arrows to see what is coming up next.  This application gets bonus points from me because it will run from my SD card.  Download Google Maps for your ACCESS Powered Treo, formerly known as Palm Powered.

Palm Media Studio to turn your DVD's into movies for your Palm Powered Device

May 23, 2006

Palm Media StudioIt's almost summer and time for road trips, do you want to lug your laptop and all it's wires with you to watch a movie on the road?  I don't...I recently purchased Palm Media Studio by Makayama Media to turn my DVD movies into smaller files that I can watch on my Treo.

The software installs an encoding package on a Windows XP computer, you pick a video file from your harddrive, CD, or DVD and in only three clicks, the software turns it into a compressed movie file.

The software decodes the following content: AVI, MPEG1, DivX, XVID, VOB, ASF on the following drives: harddrive, CD, and DVD. After conversion, the content is automatically stored on the desktop, you will need to move it to your memory card, and can be played with the bundled TCPMP-player (open source software) on your Palm Device.

The following models are supported: PALM TUNGSTEN C, E, E2, T, T3, T5, T|X, W, TREO 600, 650, ZIRE 71, 72 CLIE TJ35, TG50, TH55, NX70, NX73, UX50, ZODIAC 1 & 2, GARMIN iQue 3series.

I was able to watch a couple of movies using a 1 GB SD card during a recent 4 hour layover in Atlanta without having to bring out my laptop or worry about trying to plug-in because of power consumption.  You can download a free trial of the software at the PalmSource Software Store.

Tax Time: Pocket Quicken to the rescue!

March 21, 2006

15350

April 15th is looming, are your records up to date?  Have you kept track of your expenses?  Pocket Quicken makes record keeping on the fly much easier.  It is designed to integrate with the desktop version of Quicken and during the setup of accounts; it encourages you to Hotsync your device to get the current information from there.  I am horrible at keeping a paper check register because I hate manually updating my information.  Now my bank information is updated in Quicken and sync'd with my handheld.

Pocket Quicken also allows you to set a PIN to ensure only you can access your data.  The account numbers can be hidden so your data is protected.  You can purchase Pocket Quicken at the PalmSource Software Store at a 15% discount.  Then next year during tax time, you can just import your Quicken information into your favorite tax preparation software.

Multiplayer Championship Poker - Texas Hold'em Internet Edition by RealDice.com

January 20, 2006

Screenshot02_big PalmSource recently attended CES in Las Vegas, during our presentation in the Palm, Inc. booth, I had the pleasure of doing a live demo of Multiplayer Championship Poker Internet Edition by Realdice.com.  Steve has blogged about his obsession with poker, this game can take that obsession to new heights, you can play online, offline, anytime, anywhere.  Multiplayer Championship Poker is the world's first Internet-enabled Texas Hold'em poker for Palm OS.  Most days I demo'd the game on a TX in landscape mode using wifi to connect with other players from PalmSource, using a variety of Palm devices like the Treo 650 connected using GPRS and the LifeDrive using wifi.

Multiplayer Championship Poker lets you play on the Internet against real people or offline in Single Player Mode, against the strongest Hold'em AI, in ring games and multi-table tournaments. Make your own characters, guide them from rags to riches, and use your custom characters online.  The guys at Realdice.com were kind enough to let us use a not-yet-released version of the game for the PC, to show how the PDA's and Treo can play against the laptop online.  You can download a 7-day trial for your Palm device from Realdice.com, I think you will be hooked!

Texas Hold’em Poker on Palm OS

October 14, 2005

Texas_holdem I am not alone in my obsession with Texas Hold’em poker.  Rarely can you flip through the television channels these days without seeing a poker tournament of some kind.  Nearly all the popular online gaming websites have versions of Texas Hold’em available as well.  For many months, I have been searching for the perfect poker game for my Palm Treo to appease my addiction while I’m away from the computer or tv.  My search is over.

Concrete Software makes many great Palm OS software applications and poker games including my personal favorite, Aces Texas Hold'em - No Limit.  The game has a ton of great features which you can learn about by clicking here.  If you enjoy Texas Hold’em, you are sure to be impressed with this game.  Good luck and happy gaming!

Watch Television on Your Treo 650

September 30, 2005

MobitvI was able to play around with MobiTV the other day and I was impressed.  Available through purchase of a monthly subscription, MobiTV allows Treo 650 users to watch over 20 popular television channels including CNBC, Fox Sports and Discovery Channel. Visit http://www.mobitv.com/channels/treo.html for a full channel lineup.

Try it out by downloading the promo application.  You only get to watch the MobiTV commercial, but it gives you an idea of what MobiTV looks like on a Treo 650.

MobiTV requires a lot of data transfer, so make sure you have an unlimited data plan with your carrier.
